Basically, there are three kinds of punching bags: wall or ceiling mounted bags and freestanding bags. Each has each advantages depending on your home accommodations.

While shadowboxing serves as a great pre-workout warmup and helps you improve your speed and movement and perfect your technique, it is missing one key ingredient: resistance. Using a punching bag to practice gives you the benefit of impact which actually helps you develop functional strength.
Punching bags are also a staple of Krav Maga fitness classes so having one in your home gym will allow you to physically train like a true fighter.
